The answer to this question will depend on whether you want to burn calories in the short term i.e instantly or you want to achieve this objective in the long term.

How Does Exercise Help You Burn More Calories?
The way this works is that, when you exercise, you inevitably use and move your body muscles. Using the various muscles means the muscles have to do some work. Work done by the muscles during exercise activity inevitably leads to energy expenditure. The energy expended represents calorie loss. That is one way.
The other way exercise helps you burn more calories is that the more you exercise, the more you are likely going to replace fat with muscle. The more muscle you have the more your metabolic rate goes up because muscle is a lot more metabolically active than fat.
A higher metabolic rate means you burn more calorie even at rest when you are doing very little e.g whilst sleeping.
So, What’s The Best Exercise To Burn Calories In The Short Term?
If you want to burn more calories in the short term, then your best bet is to engage in exercises that provide that immediate energy expenditure…and what are they?
Aerobic exercises fulfil that objective very well. Aerobic exercises as the name suggests are exercises that require oxygen supply to the muscles being used in that physical activity.
These exercises demand oxygen to be supplied through an increased blood flow from the lungs. This is facilitated by an increase in heart rate with the heart muscles also pumping more efficiently.
That is the reason why aerobic exercises are also called cardio-exercises because of the involvement of the heart in making this possible. The added bonus with cardio or aerobic exercises is that they actually make the cardiovascular system to function more efficiently quite apart from the calorie burning objective.
Improving your cardiovascular fitness does have immense health benefits. However to have these benefits and burn calories at the same time, you should endeavour to do these exercises for at least 30 – 40 minutes (preferably 1 hour) on each occasion.

They are usually performed for short duration of time during which time they draw on your body glycogen stores mobilized from the liver. The glycogen released from the liver stores is used as the energy source for these workouts.
So what are these workouts then?
Simple. Any weight training exercise like weight lifting, push-ups, using dumb-bells etc is ideal for this objective.
What Is The Best Approach For Calorie Burning?
If you ask me this question, my opinion is to combine both forms of workouts (aerobic and anaerobic exercises) to get the best result. What I mean by this is, to split your workout time between the aerobic exercises and anaerobic workouts…
…but you need to give a slight edge to the aerobic workouts.
If say you embark on a 1 hour workout. You split the exercise routine by doing the aerobic workout for about 45 minutes and finish off with weight training for the other 15 minutes. This way you get the best of both worlds.
